Role: Software Engineer
Result: Offer after the onsite
Report time: 6/23/2021
This process emphasized practical experience, detailed project discussions, and system reasoning more than traditional algorithm drills.
Recruiter screen
- Asked about GPA, even though the candidate had graduated years earlier
- Confirmed work-authorization eligibility
Technical phone interview
- No algorithm problem
- Focused on a recent project
- Included repeated design questions and detailed follow-ups
Online assessment
- One debugging task
- Two simple array problems
- The candidate could choose the programming language
Onsite — five rounds
- A 15-minute introduction with the full interview group.
- A 45-minute Railroad Crossing Safety Control System design round. Sensors detected an approaching train, multiple computers participated in the control system, and gates had to lower before the train arrived and rise after it passed.
- A hiring-manager round covering the candidate's career history, reasons for job changes, failures, conflicts, and working with limited information.
- A discussion about code quality, integration-testing strategy, and reliable testing for mutually dependent microservices.
- A redesign of a previous project without cloud services, followed by questions about required components, Kafka, and databases.
The team called on the same day to say an offer was coming. The recruiter indicated that total compensation might be below $200,000, which made the candidate uncertain about accepting.
