The problem used a referral tree. When one person referred someone, the bonus could also move up through their referral chain. Bonus values could be positive or negative.

The task also needed a leaderboard. People were ranked by total reward, with names used to break ties.

They had trouble understanding the problem and didn’t finish the code. The rejection came the next day.
