RejectedGoogle New Grad Phone Screen Rejection: Placeholder Replacement and Communication Lessons
Role: Software Engineer, New Grad
Result: Rejected after the first coding round
Report time: July 2026
Coding: string placeholder replacement
Given an input string and a set of replacement rules, replace every placeholder with its corresponding value.
A placeholder has the form %key%, where key is looked up in the rule set.
Example:
- Input:
abc%x%123 - Rule:
x -> hello - Output:
abchello123
A commenter asked whether there was a follow-up, but the candidate did not answer.
Practice: String Pattern Replacement
Interview experience
The candidate completed the problem with interviewer hints but struggled with the Google Docs coding environment, visually tracking brackets, receiving the prompt verbally, and working with a very reserved interviewer.
Recruiter feedback said that corner cases were not considered carefully enough and that communication needed improvement. The candidate's usual habit was to write a full solution and repair details afterward, while this interview rewarded clarifying and aligning first, explaining the classification of cases, and writing stable code without unnecessary variables or state.
The behavioral interview went well and received positive feedback.
The candidate's main takeaway was that more LeetCode volume alone was not the answer. They needed to align with the interviewer before coding, communicate continuously, and remain composed under pressure.
