In processGoogle 2026 New Grad R1 Pass: String Parsing Discussion and Hypothetical BQ
Role: Software Engineer, New Grad / Early Career
Result: Passed R1
Report time: November 2025
Coding interview
The candidate received a string-processing problem that felt partly object-oriented. The string contained a special delimiter, and the task involved extracting valid substrings and decoding or processing them.
Most of the interview was spent aligning with the interviewer on edge cases and deciding exactly what the output should contain. Once the requirements were aligned, the implementation was simple.
The source does not preserve the delimiter grammar, validity rule, decode rule, output contract, or examples. Those are the core judged requirements, so no practice link is asserted.
Behavioral interview
The interviewer asked five or six hypothetical scenarios and said there was no single correct answer:
- A more senior person presents a planned project, but you believe you have a better approach.
- Your slow progress affects someone else.
- Someone else's slow progress affects you under a tight deadline.
- A new team's culture is poor and you receive many low-value tasks.
- You discover a bug in your project that will affect the business.
The candidate answered with intended actions rather than STAR stories after the interviewer clarified that examples were not required. They learned they had passed R1 the next day and later received R2 scheduling outreach.
